did any of you see the identity of King Amil coming? because it completely took me by surprise! I guess it just didn't hit me how important Mitt was. I was almost resigning myself to Mitt not doing anything extremely important, and then that happened. I was probably as surprised as he was. Except happy about it, not ready to ragequit, haha.
that said, I love how DWJ develops Mitt. when you reread it with the knowledge that he becomes king, it's really amazing how he starts out as this honest, innocent kid who's afraid of a festival, becomes a (let's admit it) sexist jerk, then becomes extremely honest and honorable again. if still rough around the edges.

I was completely surprised by it, but then again, I rarely pick things up by that ahead of time. I was so caught up in the book that I wasn't really taking time to make any predictions. I did wonder how there would be space left to introduce Amil and have his being king be satisfying, so I should've caught on that he was someone who'd already been introduced. Mitt does grow on you. I think he's my favorite of the Dalemark characters. I rushed through the Spellcoats, staying up way late to finish it, because I was so eager to get to Crown of Dalemark, where I knew from the back cover that Mitt would reappear. (Maybe that's why I don't love the Spellcoats as much as everyone else seems to; I spent the whole book wanting to be finished with it. I really ought to do a proper Spellcoats reread sometime and see what i think.)

I definitely did not see it coming, either. It's funny, I think part of how she managed to do it, and make me not even try and guess, was that from Maewen's point of view, it's boring history stuff, and also from her POV, kings are never gangly teenagers, you know, even though we know intellectually that sometimes kings actually ARE like 14 when they ascend a throne.
I get so annoyed with other authors when I guess stuff long before I should guess it, so I keep studying up on DWJ for pointers in subtle misdirection, haha.
(Ugh, I just read a book that was like 600 pages and I guessed the Major Plot Twist from like page 100, and then I couldn't even enjoy the book, I just skimmed ahead to confirm it and put it down because after that I felt like the main character was Too Stupid To Live.)
